Technology being rolled out at North Carolina State University will soon allow students to watch classroom lectures on video from their dorm rooms.

IBM announced it has donated e-learning software code to the Sakai Project, a group of learning institutions creating and deploying open-source course management, collaboration and online research support tools for higher education. The donation is part of IBM's overall support of open computing in education. LockLizard Protector (www.locklizard.com/html_security.htm) has been specifically designed to stop e-learning courses from being pirated. It prevents unauthorized users from accessing course content, and controls what authorized users can do with it (copy, share, print for example) and for how long. Serious e-learning growth has yet to happen. Why? Web search leader Google Wednesday launched a site devoted entirely to the Bard, that allows U.S. users to browse through the full texts of his 37 plays. Readers can even plug in words, such as "to be or not to be" from Hamlet, and immediately be taken to that part of the play.
How can higher education cope with escalating demands for institutional accountability? Ask the distance educators. Continuous growth in distance education forces constant evaluation and improvement.
Enrollment of students taking one or more courses online grew 18.2 percent in 2004 and online courses were available at more than 65 percent of all colleges offering face-to-face courses, according to the Sloan Consortium. Though a majority of U.S. higher education institutions offer some form of distance learning, many administrators and governing bodies question whether distance learning is as good as traditional learning.
